IPCC SREX Regional Outreach Meeting was held in Beijing

On April 26, an  outreach meeting was opened in China Meteorological Administration (CMA), Beijing, on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) on Managing the Risks of Extreme Events and Disasters to Advance Climate Change Adaptation (SREX).

 

Zheng Guoguang, Administrator of CMA attended the opening ceremony.

 

Qin Dahe, Co-Chair of IPCC Working Group I made a speech.


The opening ceremony was attended by Dr. Qin Dahe, Co-Chair of IPCC Working Group I; Dr. Kris Ebi, Head of IPCC Working Group II TSU; Dr. Shan Chunchang, Vice Chair, National Commission for Disaster Reduction; Dr. Zheng Guoguang, Administrator of CMA and Focal Point of China for IPCC. Mr. Shen Xiaonong, Deputy Administrator of CMA served as the moderator of the opening ceremony.

Nearly 160 representatives from Chinese government sectors, research institutes, universities, NGO, and media attended the opening ceremony.


Following the opening ceremony, a press conference was held in CMA.


Topics to be covered include:


-Extremes, exposure, and vulnerability in the context of the Special Report


- Observations and projections of extremes - Observations and projections of Impacts and losses

 

- Risk management options for improving current and future practice - Approaches to moving towards a sustainable and resilient future. 


The outreach meeting will last to tomorrow and activities include Panel Discussion of Major Findings, Policy and Practice Forum, SREX Hard Talk, Recap on Day 1 and Introduction of Break-out Groups(BOGs, Break-out Group Meetings, Poster Exhibition by Young Scientists, Report Back from Break Out groups and so on.


The Special Report on Managing the Risks of Extreme Events and Disasters to Advance Climate Change Adaptation (SREX) was published online on 28 March 2012. The print edition is expected to be available in mid-May. Its Summary for Policy Makers was released on 18 November 2011.


The development of the IPCC Special Report on Managing the Risks of Extreme Events and Disasters to Advance Climate Change Action was led by IPCC Working Groups I (The Physical Science Basis) and II (Impacts, Adaptation, and Vulnerability).


Working Group I’s Co-Chairs are Qin Dahe of the China Meteorological Administration, Beijing, China, and Thomas Stocker of the University of Bern, Switzerland. Working Group II’s Co-Chairs are Vicente Barros of the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Chris Field of the Carnegie Institution for Science, Stanford, USA.


The SREX Regional Outreach Meeting in Beijing was organized by the China Meteorological Administration,sponsored by  the Overseas Development Institute(ODI), UK and  and the Climate and Development Knowledge Network. (Apr. 26)
