CMA's FY-03 satellite joined the International Charter

In together with the Gaofen-1 satellite, a high-resolution observation satellite of China, the FY-03 meteorological satellite of China Meteorological Administration (CMA) joined the International Charter "Space and Major Disasters", which was recognized by the 31st session of the Charter in Bejinig on April 14-17.

Launched in September 2013, FY-03 has greatly enhanced the performance of earth observation in comparison with the first generation polar-orbiting meteorological satellite. FY-3C has 12 sensing instruments, including Visible Infrared Radiometer, Microwave Scanning Radiometer, Microwave Temperature Sounder (MWTS), Microwave Humidity Sounder (MWHS), Microwave Imager, a Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer, UV-ozone sounder, Total Ozone UV Detector, Solar Radiation and the Earth Radiation Detector, Space Environmental Monitoring Suits, and GNSS Occultation Detectors. Among them, the MWTS and MWHS have been upgraded to the version of Ⅱ which could enhance the precision of atmospheric sounding. Meanwhile, the new added payload GNSS Occultation Detectors could improve the capabilities of 3D and vertical sounding for global atmosphere.

Up to now, all of the Fengyun series meteorological satellites operated by CMA have joined the Charter. With these satellites, CMA has actively responded to the request of the Charter in a few emergencies and also obtained valuable data through the Charter in domestic disaster rescuing. (Apr. 21)
