
On Nov. 10 the Regional Workshop on Climate Monitoring and Analysis of Climate Variability: Implementation of Climate Watch System in RA ¢ò with focus on Monsoon affected areas was opened in Beijing.
Wang Shourong, Deputy Administrator of China Meteorological Administration (CMA) attended the opening of the workshop and expressed that CMA would give continues support to Beijing Climate Center (BCC) enhancing its role for natural disaster prevention. He hoped the workshop would provide a good platform for exchange and cooperation among countries and scientists. Mr Pierre Bessemoulin, President of WMO Commission for Climatology, and Mr Omar Baddour, Representative of WMO were presented at the workshop.
Wang Shourong said that the World Climate Conference 3 was establishing the Global Framework for Climate Services (GFCS), which covered climate monitoring, prediction, service, information and other aspects aiming to mitigate meteorological disasters. He said that in order to implement the purpose CMA was improving climate monitoring and prediction, enhancing assessment capability for meteorological disaster risk, and carrying out assessment for development of wind and solar resources.
As one of the WMO regional climate centers, he said BCC had made great progress in strengthening international exchange and cooperation and enhancing the capability of monitoring, prediction, and service for regional and global climate.
It is reported that the workshop would focus on climate monitoring, which was an important part for establishing GFCS. The experts from India, Japan, Laos, Pakistan, Korea, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, and Hong Kong attended the workshop. (Nov. 11)
