From July 10 of 2017, Shaanxi Provincial Meteorological Service (The Service) has switched into real-time single track operation of smart grid forecast. There are 140,000 3 km × 3 km grid points to cover Shaanxi province, that click on any points on Shaanxi’s map, you can acquire the forecast products immediately.
Each grid point can real-timely displays forecast value for 11 meteorological factors including temperature, precipitation, wind direction, wind speed, visibility and others. In addition, it can provides high-temperature, hail, gale and total 10 types of disastrous forecast products.
The refined smart grid forecast changed the traditional forecast production mode gradually, from the previous 98 county stations fuzzy forecast has become to digital, intelligent and refined forecast. Meanwhile, it optimized forecast temporal interval from original 12 hours forecast to hourly forecast within 72 hours.
The integrated forecast platform
The integrated forecast platform is based on numerical weather prediction (NWP) and adopts DCOEF to conduct the objective model interpretation. It can be folded into different models such as ECMWF, JAPAN, GRAPES-MESO, and NECP and is consistent with CIMISS interface. The integrated platform provides over 10 categories of forecast compiling instruments. The integrated platform can also execute real-time testing of data pattern and subjective correction forecasting. The integrated platform is composed of the smart compilation system and smart interpretation system. At present, the integrated platform has developed 4 functional modules, namely, grid point factor, short-term nowcasting warning, disastrous weather location and disastrous weather impact forecast. It has also established the operational platform framework of grid point data center, model data interpretation and pre-treatment, grid point forecast compilation, product generation device, and product distribution and monitoring. It will make the entire distribution and service process more convenient, effectively reduce errors in forecasting services, and lay the foundation for the entire prediction network in Shaanxi.
Grid point forecasting effect evaluation and analysis
Smart grid weather forecast plays good role in supporting important events. For example, Ningshan county meteorological bureau firstly used refined grid forecast to provide supports for mountain cross-country challenge competition. The refined forecast analysis covered along the competition lines, rolling updated 3-kilometers forecast every hour. With the powerful support of refined grid point forecast, the events like the sixth Ankang Dragon Boat Festival have received favorable feedbacks on meteorological services. Relevant meteorological sectors have applied refined grid point forecasting products and conducted analysis of relevant meteorological factors. Leaders at all levels and the general public have voiced their positive comments.
Shaanxi Provincial Meteorological Service established “one network” operational process, unified data source of forecast and service, basically realized operational application of “grid forecast cloud” in the whole province. The data of smart gird forecast system could be shared and used by province, cities and counties.
