Opening Ceremony of Seminar on the Early Warning of Meteorological Disasters for Developing Countries has been held in NUIST


On April 5th, 2017 Seminar on the Early Warning of Meteorological Disasters for Developing Countries organized by Chinese Ministry of Commerce and WMO RTC Nanjing opened in NUIST. Professor Jiang Jianqing, the President of NUIST and Director of WMO RTC Nanjing addressed the opening ceremony held by Wang Suchun, the Executive Deputy Director of WMO RTC Nanjing.

On the opening ceremony, Professor Jiang extended warm welcome to all the participants and briefly introduced NUIST and WMO RTC Nanjing. In his marks, he emphasized the severe damage on economy and society caused by meteorological disasters. According to statistics from the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction, the annual mean economic loss caused by meteorological disasters accounts for 3%–6% of the total amount of global GDP. Therefore, he pointed out that it’s vital for all the countries in the world, especially developing countries to acquire the meteorological disasters early-warning technology. In his introduction, this seminar involves all aspects of meteorological disasters forewarning, of which the lessons are both scientific and practical and are in line with the target countries’ demand of talents training. Finally, he expressed his wishes for all the participants to share their experiences on this platform.

Mr.Phillippe Jean M.Veerabadren from Mauritius delivered a speech as the representative of all the participants. He said that meteorological disasters has become more severe and frequent worldwide. To reduce the financial and human losses caused by meteorological disasters, it’s essential to provide forecast and early-warning. He believed that the study here will benefit participants much, in hope of that the early-warning technology of all the participants can be improved to tackle meteorological disasters brought about by extreme weathers through this study. In the end, he expressed his thanks to the Chinese Ministry of Commerce, Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology as well as WMO RTC Nanjing for holding the course.(Apr.21)
