Inaugural leadership and management programme for senior management of National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHS) in Regional Associations (RA) II and V


Participants of the Inaugural Leadership and Management Programme Developing leadership and management skills of senior management of NMHS has been identified as a priority of WMO. In support of such training needs, the Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS) sponsored and conducted the inaugural Leadership and Management Programme for Senior Management of NMHS in RA II and RA V in Singapore on 10 – 14 September 2018. The Programme was organised in collaboration with the WMO Regional Office for Asia and the South West Pacific and the WMO Education and Training Office (ETO).

Director-General of Meteorological Service Singapore, Ms Wong Chin Ling, welcomes participants to the course Dr Yinka Adebayo, Director of ETO, remarked in his opening address that the Programme was a rare opportunity for leaders of NMHSs to gather in a classroom to learn and share their experiences. The Programme was well attended by 20 Members from RA II and RA V, and included the Permanent Representatives of several countries. During the week-long course, participants were exposed to a variety of topics including adaptive leadership, performance management, and effective communications. The diverse backgrounds of the participants contributed to an enriching exchange of views. Participants commended the professional conduct of the Programme and appreciated the opportunity to network in a classroom setting. Many noted that it was a unique course focused on developing leadership and management skills, and supported its continuation. The value in continuing such leadership and management programmes was highlighted at the Seventeenth Session of RA V in October 2018. RA V members called for such training activities for senior management to be included under the WMO Education and Training
