FY-2H and FY-3D meteorological satellites are officially delivered

On November 30, FY-2H and FY-3D satellites have been officially delivered to China Meteorological Administration (CMA).

These two satellites have crystallized the latest achievements made in China’s independent scientific innovation, which will further enhance the integrated observation and application service capabilities of China’s meteorological satellites. In the meanwhile, as the member of global earth observation operational satellite sequence, they will play an instrumental role in serving “Belt and Road” Initiative and building a community with a shared future for mankind.

FY-2H was launched on June 5, 2018, becoming the last satellite of the first-generation geostationary orbiting satellites. FY-2H has inherited features of mature technologies and stable operation from FY-2 series satellites and is positioned at 79°E, making the in-orbit layout of FY satellites better cover upstream regions of China’s weather system and countries and regions along “Belt and Road” territories.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has expressed, during a few significant occasions, that China is willing to harness FY satellites to provide meteorological services, data products, and technical support for all parties.

FY-3D satellite is the fourth satellite among China’s second-generation polar-orbiting meteorological satellites which was successfully lifted off on November 15, 2017.

Over 6-month in-orbit testing has showcased that FY-3D can meet ever-growing varied demands in atmospheric sounding, greenhouse gases monitoring, as well as integrated observation of space environment.

FY-3D is the highest spectral resolution polar-orbiting earth observation satellites to data of China and has made strides from multispectral sounding to high spectral sounding. It is also the first remote sensing satellite which combines high spectrum and microwave and can conduct all-weather high accuracy exploration of atmospheric temperature and moisture profiling.

Its ground application system has set up a global data acquisition network composed of 4 ground stations in China and 2 polar stations, which can realize 2-hour complete global sounding data acquisition. Radiation calibration accuracy of most visible channels has reached 3%, the global leading level and the highest level in China in terms of earth observation remote sensing satellite calibration.

After operation, FY-3D will form network observation with FY-3C to ensure the sustained stable operation of China’s polar-orbiting meteorological satellites and effectively support “global observation, forecast, and services”.

At present, China has successfully launched 17 FY meteorological satellites, with 8 in stable orbital operation. Geostationary and polar-orbiting meteorological satellites have all completed upgrading and are incorporated into the global earth observation satellite sequence by World Meteorological Organization (WMO). They have become important members of WMO Integrated Global Observing System (WIGOS) and on-duty satellites under the mechanism of the international charter on disaster reduction.

Since the operation of FY satellites, they have conducted monitoring of 497 typhoons generated over west Pacific, which encompass 211 typhoons that landed in China or exerted impacts on China. The application of satellite data in Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) data has reached about 70%, which has played an instrumental role in ramping up weather prediction accuracy in China.

FY meteorological satellites have generated about 100 quantitative products and find wide application in sectors like ocean, agriculture, forestry, hydrology, environment, transportation, aviation and so on. They have provided over 1000 remote sensing monitoring information to all sectors on an annual basis and offered support for 78 major national programs and key scientific research programs. In 2018 alone, FY satellites have conducted 1214 6-minute intensive observation and provided services for over 2600 domestic users from 100 sectors.

The Emergency Support Mechanism for International Users of FengYun Meteorological Satellites in Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (FYESM) was set up in April, 2018. From September to October in 2018, in response to super typhoons Mangkhut and Yutu, Vietnam and the Philippines applied to activate FYESM for three times. CMA implemented intensive observation of FY satellites and provided related products.(Dec.4)
