Special dataset for Qinghai-Tibet plateau meteorology was established

On July 28, a CMA’s special research project on numerical model impact assessment and technology improving on complex topographic structure of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and its surrounding areas has passed the evaluation. This project establishes plateau-features dataset including atmospheric scientific experiment intensive observation data, evaluates mesoscale model forecast of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and its surrounding areas and presents improving ideas and methods for mesoscale model forecast technology. 

The project team established the dataset for the plateau and its eastern surrounding areas from 2010 to 2014. The data mainly include various intensive observational data of southwest vortex in 2010-2014, the general observation data of China’s western stations, the atmospheric boundary layer data observed from Litang and Wenjiang atmospheric observation stations.

In view of the complex terrain of Southwest region, the project develops the objective inspection system, which creatively divides the test areas into “plateau area”, “side slope area” and “basin area”, and conducts sub-regional tests to reveal the terrain impact on forecast model. Employing this system, the project team carried out two kinds of regional numerical models (GRAPES-MESO and WRF) evaluation, and also developed data assimilation test and assessed the assimilation effects, providing a reference for data assimilation of operational model in Southwest region.  (Aug.4)
