CMA launched emergency response for earthquake in Jiuzhaigou, Sichuan province

According to the China Earthquake Networks Center, the earthquake jolted Jiuzhaigou County in Sichuan at 9:19 p.m. Tuesday (Beijing Time).

Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for all-out efforts to rapidly organize relief work and rescue the injured people after a 7.0-magnitude earthquake hit southwest China's Sichuan Province.

In the wake of the earthquake, Ms. Liu Yaming, Administrator of China Meteorological Administration (CMA) instantly contacted Mr. Peng Guang, Director-general of Sichuan Provincial Meteorological Service (SPMS) and was informed of disaster conditions. She required that the Service make all-out endeavor to contact meteorological departments in disaster-stricken regions, keep tabs on weather conditions, learn of the demand of relief and rescue work, and exert no efforts to ensure meteorological support. Subsequently, the National Meteorological Centre held online consultation meeting with Sichuan in terms of future weather conditions in stricken areas. Mr. Yu Xinwen, Deputy Administrator of CMA, also called the Service and demanded that provincial meteorological service should reinforce consultation with NMC, take precautionary measures against potential aftershocks, provide guidance, consolidate monitoring, prediction and warning services, and make sure the safety of personnel.

At 11:30 p.m. on August 8, CMA activated level-three emergency response for addressing the earthquake disaster in Sichuan. It is required that all relevant meteorological departments attached to CMA enter the emergency position and put corresponding meteorological services in place.

Aba prefecture meteorological department activated level-one emergency response at 10:40 p.m. on August 8.

On the morning of August 9, Ms. Jiao Meiyan organized deployment meeting for services in the stricken area. Ms. Jiao Meiyan required that related departments should follow the guiding spirit of President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang, consolidate monitoring and prediction, boost targeted services, reinforce joint consultation and information distribution, make sure publicity work, and issue timely meteorological forecasts.

The National Meteorological Centre predicted that from August 9 to August 10, disaster-stricken region will be exposed to cloudy weather, with short-range shower weather. The temperature will stand at 16~30℃.

It is predicted that on August 11, Jiuzhaigou County will be exposed to moderate precipitation, which hinders disaster rescue. Rescue workers should make precautionary arrangements. Local residents and rescue workers should ward off potential landslides and mudflows. (Aug. 9)
