CMA and KMA held 14th session of JWG strengthening cooperation on Winter Olympics services

On December 5, the 14th joint working group session on meteorological cooperation between China Meteorological Administration (CMA) and Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) was held in Bejing. Ms. Liu Yaming, Administrator of CMA and Dr.Nam Jaecheol, Administrator of KMA signed minutes of the meeting on behalf of both sides. Mr. Yuyong, Deputy Administrator of CMA presided over the meeting.

Both sides reviewed the work progress since the 13th working group meeting, and forged consensus on 8 fields including forecasting and service technologies during Winter Olympics, climate prediction and regional cooperation, meteorological communication, joint typhoon seminar, meteorological observation, and satellite data application, and so on.

Ms. Liu Yaming remarked that bilateral cooperation has gone way back and scored fruitful results in areas such as sandstorm observation, meteorological service during Winter Olympics, numerical weather prediction (NWP), and scientific research. She expected that both sides can deepen cooperation, elevate scientific and service levels, and realize mutual benefit and win-win situation, thus contributing more to mitigating natural disaster risks. She extended her best wishes to the success of meteorological support for Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in 2018 and hoped that the two countries could solidify exchanges and collaboration in major events meteorological support, and provide food for thought for meteorological support for Beijing Winter Olympics in 2022.

Dr.Nam Jaecheol spoke highly of the rapid development of China’s meteorological cause. He stated that cooperation between CMA and KMA ranked as the most intimate and representative one among its bilateral meteorological collaborations. KMA will make an all-out endeavor for meteorological services in Pyeongchang Winter Olympics and exchange experience with CMA. Both sides are vigorously engaging in new technologies development in fields such as meteorological big data, smart forecast, and Artificial Intelligence. He hoped that CMA and KMA can expand cooperative fields, consolidate cooperation in disaster prevention and reduction and scientific research, and lend an impetus to meteorological development in both the two countries.

The KMA delegation also visited CMA institutions like NMC, NSMS, NMIC and PMSC and went to Shanghai Meteorological Service and Shanghai typhoon research institution.

Since the cooperative agreement signed between the two sides since July, 1994, CMA and KMA have conducted over 150 cooperative projects involving 1200 personnel visiting exchanges. (Dec. 12)
