On January 16, national meeting of provincial meteorological service directors was opened in Beijing. The meeting is designed to map out new strategies for meteorological development, summarize work of 2017 and the past five years, deploy tasks for 2018, and mobilize meteorological staff to make strenuous endeavor for ushering in the new journey for meteorological modernization.

Prior to the meeting, Mr. Wang Yang, Deputy Premier of the State Council, has put forward specific requirements for meteorological work at the present and in the years to come.
At the meeting, Ms. Liu Yaming, Administrator of China Meteorological Administration (CMA), delivered a work report. Mr. Yu Rucong, Mr. Shen Xiaonong, Ms. Jiao Meiyan, Mr. Yu Xinwen, and Mr. Yu Yong, Deputy Administrator of CMA, attended the meeting.
The work report has summed meteorological work in 2017 and the past five years, including consolidating overall deployment and strategic planning; conducting full-fledged work of meteorological disaster prevention and mitigation; improving the provision of meteorological services, safeguarding ecological civilization, and strengthening measures in agro-meteorological services; forging ahead with meteorological operation capacity building, promoting observation system modernization, enhancing quality and efficiency of observational operation, developing modern meteorological forecast operation, and propelling modern meteorological services; following through the deployment of meteorological modernization; spurring reforms in key areas such as implementing national reform deployment, solidifying thunder protection and disaster reduction, propelling operational and technical reform, and deepening meteorological sci-tech mechanism reform; carrying out innovation-driven strategies, strengthening sci-tech innovation, expanding cooperation, and reinforcing meteorological knowledge outreach; implementing talent cultivation strategies, strengthening leadership, and intensifying educational training; strengthening the legal foundation for meteorological development in terms of legislation, law-based administration, scientific administration, and cultural construction; reinforcing CPC construction and ensuring a clean government.
The socialism with Chinese characteristics has ushered in a new era and new challenges and requirements lie ahead of meteorological sector. The meteorological modernization drive has to beat in synchronization with the pulse of this new age, outlining a greater picture and achieving development on the basis of higher quality. From now to 2020, we need to channel the modernization drive to satisfy the overall requirement of completion of building a moderately prosperous society in all respects. By 2035 the comprehensive meteorological strength has to march into the world top rankings. By the middle of the century, turn China into a country that takes a lead in meteorological overall strength and international influence.
The work report has outlined eight critical tasks for meteorological work in 2018. Firstly, enhancing meteorological capacity building. Implementing major projects of meteorological modernization and developing intelligent devices, and building a seamless and smart weather forecast system with full coverage. Secondly, conducting full-fledged work of meteorological disaster prevention and mitigation. Fortifying emergency forecast and early warning, innovatively achieving the risk management of meteorological disasters. Thirdly, harnessing the edge of meteorology to support national ecological civilization construction. Fourthly, pumping energy into rural areas to rejuvenate them, and building a system to support the agriculture. Fifthly, improving military and civilian integration in terms of meteorology and achieving regional coordinated development. Sixthly, inspiring the power of innovation as a way of giving impetus to sci-tech innovation and talent pool cultivation. Seventhly, deepening meteorological reform and lifting the level of meteorological legalization. Lastly, deepening opening up and collaboration, elevating international influence of meteorology.
During the meeting, preeminent meteorological teams and individuals were commended and accredited with the credentials. World Meteorological Centre (Beijing) and Centennial Observing Stations were conferred with the certificates. (Jan. 17)
