The first nationwide snow investigation was announced a success gathering abundant valuable data for studying climate change

Recently, “Investigation on Snow Characteristics and Their Distribution in China”, the first nationwide large-scale snow investigation, was successfully put to an end.

This project mapped out six investigation routes. From November 2017 to March 2018, relevant researchers spread out to Northwest China, Northeast China, Inner Mongolia, and Qinghai-Tibet Plateau as well as southern China to carry out snow investigation, respectively. A great deal of valuable data were gathered, including snow depth, snow density, snow water equivalent, snow particle shape, hardness of snowpack surface, liquid water content, grain size, snow temperature, snow/soil temperature, dielectric constant, and some chemical parameters.

Snow can serve as an important indicator of climate change. As a major reservoir of fresh water resource, snow can feed main rivers in China, meaning a lot to nourish the ecological environment along the Belt and Road. However, we must also be aware of the natural disasters induced by it.

The general objective of the investigation is to build a comprehensive and systematic database of snow characteristics in China, providing basic data for the research of climate change, the evaluation of water resource and the monitoring and early warning of snow disaster. Furthermore, it will also provide scientific support for the economic development, ecological civilization construction and Belt and Road initiative.
