It is informed from the Specific Plan of Integrated Observation System in the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games recently released by China Meteorological Administration (CMA) that meteorological observation system will be further optimized and a three-dimensional observation layout composed of 12 observation categories and over 1000 suites of observation facilities will be formulated, effectively underpinning meteorological services, weather prediction and scientific research for these events.

Weather conditions are quite volatile in Winter Olympics venues. Mr. Yang Shuan, Deputy President of Beijing Organising Committee for the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games remarked that ice and snow events were more sensitive to meteorological factors compared with summer events. All these have constituted a higher demand of meteorological services.

According to the Plan, meteorological departments will gear to global cutting-edge level, establish three-dimensional meteorological observation network, and conduct integrated collection of factors like wind direction, wind speed, temperature, relative humidity, air pressure, precipitation, snow depth, and visibility. By that time, average distance between stations in Yanqing sports venues and neighboring places will reach 3.45 kilometers while this figure is 6.6 kilometers in Zhangjiakou sports venues and surrounding regions. Meteorological factors observation time span will be down to minute scale.

Meteorological departments will harness the big data and Internet of Things technology to enable connectivity between facilities and elevate the smart level of observation stations.

It is worth mentioning that volunteer observation will provide efficacious supplement to meteorological observation network in those venues. Under the unified arrangement of the Beijing Organising Committee, testing contests of 2022 Winter Olympic Games will activate this kind of observation. Through professional training, meteorological volunteers in those venues will leverage automatic hand-held observation facilities, and transmit meteorological data like snow temperature and depth on the spot.

Mr. Yao Xuexiang, Director of CMA Meteorological Centre for 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games, expressed that planning of observation systems should take into account relevant demands on meteorological services from ice and snow economy of post-Winter-Olympic-Games . (Jun. 13)
