IPCC held the First Lead Author Meeting for Working Group I contribution to the Sixth Assessment Report in China

On June 25, Working Group I Contribution to the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) First Lead Author Meeting was opened in Guangzhou. The meeting will discuss concrete compilation matters of every chapter of AR6. As the lead sector for Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) activities in China, China Meteorological Administration (CMA) sponsored this meeting. Near 300 experts from IPCC, and participants of AR6 Working Group I attended this event.

Mr. Yu Yong, Deputy Administrator of CMA remarked that IPCC assessment report has pooled the intellectual resources of the most prominent scientists across the globe and the most up-to-date global climate change scientific research outcomes, laying the scientific groundwork for the international community to respond to climate change. CMA will contniue pay more attention and give powerful supports.

Dr. Hoesung Lee, Chairman of IPCC expressed that AR6 would provide significant scientific basis for implementing Paris Agreement. AR6 Working Group I (AR6-WGI) has heightened focus on regional climate change, risk assessment and management and will furnish forceful reference for global response to climate change.

Since its establishment over 30 years ago, IPCC has organized several thousand experts to compile five assessment reports. These reports have served as the scientific foundation for cognition of climate change by the global community and promotion of climate change governance system construction.

AR6, which includes three Working Group reports and one synthesis report, as kick-started in 2015 and is set to be finalized in 2022. Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5℃ will be released in this October.

China has been a proactive advocate and supporter for IPCC assessment reports compilation. Chinese scientists have for the 4th consecutive session, serve as the Co-Chair of Working Group I. Over 200 Chinese scientists have become major authors of IPCC AR. There are in total 721 authors in AR6, with 37 Chinese authors. Currently, Mr. Zhai Panmao, researcher from Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences serves as Co-chair of (AR6-WGI). (Jun. 26)
