CMA released a new plan for regional mumerical forecast operation

Recently, China Meteorological Administration (CMA) has publicized Regional High Resolution Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) Operational Development Plan 2018-2020, which proposed the establishment and improvement of regional models integrated R & D mechanism and third party assessment mechanism. The plan aims to establish a rapid cycle assimilation forecast system with resolution of 1-to-3-kilometer and 1-to-3 hours interval at national and regional level, and a regional ensemble forecast system with 10-kilometer resolution at the national level, by 2020.

In recent years, regional high resolution NWP has been developing at a rapid rate. National Meteorological Center and regional meteorological centers in North China, East China, South China, etc., have set up 3-to-9-kilometer horizontal resolution regional NWP system, and 15-kilometer resolution regional ensemble forecast system. NWP products have been shared across the nation via NWP clouds, and effectively underpin refined meteorological forecast, warning and services.

Oriented towards social and operational needs, the plan will revolve around the overall thinking of focus on short-range nowcasting, scientific assessment, integrated R & D, outcome sharing, and coordinated construction, establish convective scale NWP operational system which supports short-range nowcasting of severe weather, develops key technologies in terms of data assimilation, physical processes, ensemble forecasting, observation and forecasting interaction and so on.

It is projected that by 2020, overall forecating capabilities of regional models will witness remarkable progress compared with 2017. Regional NWP will give a stronger support to smart grid forecasting, short-range nowcasting, disastrous weather forecast, environmental meteorological forecasting and events. (Aug. 2)
