On May 11, the Honor Day of World Meteorological Organization takes place at the International Horticultural Exhibition 2019 Beijing, hereinafter referred to as Beijing Expo 2019.

Themed by Meteorology Makes World Better, the event aims to show the concept and action of meteorological service for human safety and well-being and satisfying people's needs for a better life in the world.

WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas congratulated the event by video.

WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas congratulated the event by video. He fully endorsed the green development concept emphasized by Chinese President Xi Jinping at the opening ceremony of the Beijing Expo 2019, and praised China's meteorological departments for their contribution to climate change mitigation and disaster prevention in China and around the world.

The event is attended by Ms Liu Yaming, Administrator of CMA; Mr Lin Keqing, Executive Vice Mayor of Beijing; Mr Zhang Wenjian, Assistant Secretary-General of the WMO; Mr Yu Rucong, Ms Jiao Meiyan and Mr Yu Yong, Deputy Administrator of CMA; Mr Zhou Jianping, Deputy Executive Director of Beijing Expo Bureau.

A press conference is held before the event.

In 2018, most natural hazards, which affected nearly 62 million people, were associated with extreme weather and climate events, and ecological environment deterioration. WMO calls for coordinated efforts to effectively address global environmental issues like climate change, pollution, and biological conservation, said Zhang Wenjian at the press conference.

WMO is a specialized agency of the United Nations with 192 member states and territories. For more than a century, WMO has been providing the essential world guidance and expertise in the delivery of weather, climate, water and related environmental services, for the improvement of the well-being of societies of all nations.

Against the background of global warming and aggravating socio-economic impacts triggered by climate change, WMO is committed to supporting members to adopt concrete measures, implement global agreements, and provide operable, accessible, and authoritative information and services for the ever-changing status of the entire earth system (ecological system included), said Zhang Wenjian.

The ECOMETEO exhibition area, organized by Beijing Municipal Meteorological Service, is sponsored jointly by World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and China Meteorological Administration (CMA). Under the theme of the Expo, there are four exhibition areas, namely ECOMETEO Pavilion, WMO Park, ECOMETEO observation demonstration station, and Expo 2019 Meteorological Centre. Through the ten exhibition themes, the Pavilion tries to explain the relationship among meteorology, horticulture and life and the importance of meteorology in building a beautiful China and the world. It also aims to convey the idea that clear waters and green mountains are as good as mountains of gold and silver. And climate change is closely linked to human civilization. The ECOMETEO observation demonstration station includes 11 kinds of meteorological observation equipment, capable of monitoring 20 meteorological elements in a timely manner. The observation data is of great significance to the atmospheric state, ecological environment and human health. Eight sets of artificial intelligence meteorological observation equipment like "Weatherface" Smart Observation Station show the latest progresses of the ecological meteorological observation technology.

Meteorology and ecology are closely combined in the Expo. For many years, CMA and meteorological departments at all levels have played a fundamentally supporting role in climate change response, national ecological security, protection and rehabilitation of ecological environment, and the construction of the ecological civilization system.

CMA has specifically set up an information base encompassing information like geological distribution of 300 kinds of horticultural crops and climate types, as well as horticultural management and decision-making meteorological service system. It remains on duty during all manner of drills and when the Expo is operating; and also provides accurate meteorological monitoring, forecasting, warning information in the Expo and neighboring areas and gives corresponding suggestions for the command center.

Currently, the bilingual official website of public meteorological service of Expo 2019 is in operation. The public can inquire about weather through computers and mobile phones, and search for meteorological services and products in terms of horticulture, daily life, transportation and tourism in the Expo and neighboring areas.
