CMA and WMO consult on further pushing ahead Belt and Road meteorological cooperation

On November 19, the third consultation meeting of the progress on implementing the Letter of Intent Between the China Meteorological Administration and the World Meteorological Organization to Promote Regional Meteorological Cooperation and Co-build the Belt and Road was held in Beijing, with a focus on consulting on future cooperative plans and concrete measures. Mr. Yu Yong, Deputy Administrator of CMA, and Mr. Zhang Wenjian, Assistant Secretary General of WMO attended the meeting.

This meeting reviewed the results both sides have achieved under Belt and Road Initiative and WMO regional cooperative framework since the last session in November 2018, and consulted on the next step cooperative focuses. In the last year, both sides rely on institutions like World Meteorological Centre Beijing, Regional Climate Centre, and Regional Training Centre, and regional cooperative mechanisms CMA has established with ASEAN and Central Asia countries to scored plentiful results in fields like promoting the implementation of WMO programmes and projects in regional levels.

Yu Yong expressed that CMA gave priority to the implementation of the Letter of Intent. In the past one year, both sides have made pronounced achievements in myriad fields like deepening regional meteorological cooperation and promoting the international application of Fengyun meteorological satellites. He hoped that both sides could harness cooperative platforms, consolidate cooperation in FY meteorological satellites serving international users, advancing the implementation of WMO regional programmes and supporting seamless earth system research, to make contributions to elevating the disaster preparedness capacity building of countries along Belt and Road.

Zhang Wenjian remarked that WMO recognized the cooperative results both sides have achieved and appreciated the contribution CMA had made in implementing WMO programmes and global capacity building. He also conveyed the anticipation of Dr. Petteri Taalas for cooperative highlights of both sides in 2020.After the meeting, the delegates visited the platform of WMC-BJ and learned about the progresses on Global Monitoring, Global Forecasting and Global Services.
