Recently, Ms. Florence Rabier, Director General of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) sent a letter to Ms. Liu Yaming, Administrator of China Meteorological Administration (CMA) and expressed gratitude to CMA for providing ECMWF with Fengyun-4A data and constantly improving new instrument data quality.
FY-4A meteorological satellite was lifted off on December 11, 2016, and is China’s new generation geostationary meteorological satellite with 4 sophisticated instruments onboard the satellite, with the first Geostationary Interferometric Infrared Sounder (GIIRS) in the world included. Since January, 2019, ECMWF has constantly received and analyzed first level radiation data of GIIRS onboard FY-4A satellite.
Florence Rabier said that GIIRS embodied a major advancement of earth atmosphere measurement in the space. Since the first GIIRS observation data reception, CMA has carried out multiple updates of GIIRS data processing software, which makes data spectrum and radiation features more accurate, with a higher time stability, as well as improving the consistency of observation data and simulation results based on ECMWF model field.
Florence Rabier especially mentioned that for the past one year, CMA, ECMWF, and Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) of University of Wisconsin–Madison had carried out fruitful cooperation. Among them, a handful of experts, especially Mr. Guo Qiang, deputy chief designer of FY-4 ground application system and his team, made strenuous endeavors and maintained communication with ECMWF. During the cooperation, experts from a few countries carried out independent comparisons of GIIRS observation data, SSEC infrared observation data, and ECMWF model simulation, diagnosed the problem of spectral shift’s influence on data flow, and finally CMA team successfully resolved the problem.
Currently, GIIRS spectrum analysis accuracy is below 10ppm, which has met the use requiremen.
