On June 25, GRAPES regional Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) system independently developed by China Meteorological Administration (CMA) was updated to version 5.0, which has realized the 3 km resolution rapid circulation assimilation prediction at 3-hour interval. It has further elevated nowcasting prediction operational capacity, which can meet the demand of NWP of severe convection at local level, in particular, severe and extreme weather events, and provide scientific support for seamless smart grid prediction service in the whole country.
The system has integrated GRAPES_MESO 3km system and GRAPES_MESO system, realized assimilation of 192 radars data, and propelled the national-level regional high resolution NWP system to kilometer-scale circulation assimilation. On the basis of the original cloud analysis system, it has added high quality observation regular sounding data and rafts of satellite data to the assimilation, enriched the kind of assimilation data and promoted real-scene product application, and further elevated the prediction accuracy of NWP; developed rapid circulation assimilation technology, which have effectively supported meteorological departments of provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities in the country to carry out severe convection and extreme weather prediction and early warning.

Via the operational review, the performance of the system has surpassed the prediction capacity of severe convection by the prior GRAPES_MESO 3km system. It is especially better in terms of prediction performance of convection in warm area affected by weak pressure.(July.2)
