On September 28, the Seventy-second Session of the Executive Council of World Meteorological Organization (WMO) was opened online. President of WMO, Gerhard Adrian chaired the meeting. Over 200 representatives like the members of the Executive Council attended the online meeting. Ms. Liu Yaming, Administrator of China Meteorological Administration (CMA), Permanent Representative of China with WMO, member of EC of WMO led the delegation to attend the meeting. Mr. Yu Yong, Deputy Administrator of CMA attended the meeting.
This meeting deliberated on topics like the preparation of the special session of world meteorological congress in 2021, the implementation of strategic planning, follow-up work after the reform, data policy, and others. On September 28, Gerhard Adrian, Secretary General of WMO, and directors of WMO bodies delivered feature reports.
During the meeting, Ms. Liu Yaming paid tribute to WMO for pushing ahead with the reform, and organizing meteorological disaster preparedness and response to climate change work against the backdrop of COVID-19. She stressed that confronted with the tremendous implications of COVID-19, this meeting should focus on the urgent matters, revive and ramp up the meteorological service capacity of developing countries, address the observation data deficit due to COVID-19, and coordinate the work of epidemic control and meteorological disaster preparedness.
This meeting concluded on October 2. This is the first online Executive Council in the history of WMMO. EC implements the decisions of Congress. The session is held annually.
