It is informed that from October 1, the current numerical prediction operational models will shift to unified naming. This is an initiative carried out by China Meteorological Administration (CMA) in consolidating operational model management. It has taken account of the science-based naming and user habit.

The rule of the unified naming is adding CMA prior to the Chinese title of all numerical models. The prefix is changed to CMA-. For instance, GRAPES is renamed CMA-GFS.

Currently, services of numerical models covers work in terms of weather consultation, technical exchanges, publicity and science popularization, and others. Besides, CMA undertakes the international responsibility of NWP data exchange and comparison of World Meteorological Organization (WMO). This unification will be conducive to smooth operation of consultation, product making and dissemination, and international data exchange and comparison.

CMA will gradually complete the transition and shift to unified NWP model naming. (Sep. 30)
