On September 30, the second phase of the 17th Session of Regional Association II (Asia) of World Meteorological Organization (WMO) passed the resolution to recognize the official operation of Regional WIGOS Centre (RWC) Beijing and RWC Tokyo. The two RWCs will carry out joint observatory network monitoring and assessment within the scope of Asia.
This news marks that RWC Beijing is capable of conducting meta data and observation data quality monitoring, assessment, tracking and improvement work within observatory network in RA II, WMO, which will be conducive to jointly elevate data quality with other countries and regions in Asia, promote the coordinated observation capacity and better tackle severe convective weather in RA II.
Mr. Luis Philipe Nunes, a WMO official remarked that China Meteorological Administration (CMA) has played a remarkable role in pushing ahead WIGOS development, and made significant contribution to the high quality development of observation data and services in RA II.
After four-year trial operation, RWC Beijing has established meta data management standard, management system, and WIGOS data quality surveillance system oriented towards RA II. It has also continuously released sounding and ground observation data quality assessment reports, conducting monitoring of data quality of RA II members, and implemented abnormal events management, tracking, and solving.
Since the joint offical operation of RWC Beijing and RWC Tokyo, RWC Beijing has detected 215 stations with abnormal data quality among RA II members, covering 137 ground stations and 25 sounding stations.
RWC Beijing also undertakes the work of training, and has held a few training courses in field of WIGOS progresses, operational systems, quality monitoring and assessment capacity and others. (Oct.9)
