At 2:00 on June 21, 2018 intensive observation scientific experiment of Southwest China vortex was formally jump-started as sounding balloons in 11 meteorological stations were flied. From 2017, Southwest China vortex observation data has been formally incorporated into Southwest regional numerical weather prediction (NWP) operational system.

In the following 41 days, technical personnel and scientific staff from observation stations will obtain back-to-back observation data of Southwest China vortex emergence, development and process of influences in 11 meteorological stations. In the meanwhile, intensive sounding data will be filed into Sichuan Meteorological Observation Data Centre on a real-time basis.

In 2010, Chengdu Plateau Meteorological Research Institute of China Meteorological Administration (CMA) conducted the first intensive observation scientific experiment of Southwest China vortex . Currently, it has been conducted for 9 consecutive years.

Previously, this experiment has provided fundamental underpinning for the third Tibetan Plateau atmospheric scientific experiment, and other plateau meteorological studies. (Jun. 28)
