Expansion and dynamics mechanism research in arid and semi-arid regions in East Asia has made advances

A research project of “expansion and dynamics mechanism research in arid and semi-arid regions in East Asia against the backdrop of global warming of 1.5°C which is carried out by Lanzhou Institute of Arid Meteorology of China Meteorological Administration (CMA), harnessed ground observation, reanalysis data, multiple model integration resources, predicted and assessed the expansion of arid and semi-arid regions in East Asia against the backdrop of global warming of 1.5°C, determined the dominant factors that triggered this expansion, analyzed the dynamics mechanism that resulted in the response of dominant factors. Since its initiation, the project has scored preliminary results. Related papers have been published in International Journal of Climatology.

This project is set to assess the dynamics simulation capabilities of climate models of arid and semi-arid regions expansion in East China in a systemic manner, predict and evaluate the expansion of arid and semi-arid regions in East Asia against the backdrop of global warming of 1.5°C and quantify the uncertainty, and clarify the circulation dynamics mechanism.
