Recently, China Meteorological Administration (CMA) has announced to set up Three Gorges national climate observatory (hereafter referred to as the Observatory) in Yichang, Hubei. This is the first national climate observatory added after CMA selected 24 national climate observatories in 2019.
The Observatory will further push forward climate adaptation, extreme climate monitoring, climate change impact assessment, and climate resource development, as well as meteorological service research.
The Observatory will carry out long term and continuous land-air and water-air flux observation in Yangtze Three Gorges Reservoir, enabling it to serve as scientific support system for climate change, ecological civilization construction, and environmental protection. It will also ramp up observation capacity of land-atmosphere boundary layer structure and surface layer meteorology, and construct extreme weather and climate event monitoring network in the reservoir and Yangtze River waterway. It is expected to propel the monitoring of ecological system. (Aug. 19)
