OTTAWA, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- Thousands of people are without power Thursday in Canada's Atlantic provinces after an overnight storm carrying freezing rain and high winds hit the region, reports reaching here said.
The storm has also caused flooding in many areas, forcing the closure of schools and streets. At least one town has gone into emergency state because of flood threats.
In the province of New Brunswick, more than 110,000 customers lost their power. There were also scattered outages affecting roughly 4,000 customers in Nova Scotia.
Much of the outage is being blamed on a buildup of ice on power lines.
Flooding has been reported in many regions in New Brunswick, and schools have been closed for a second day. The city of Saint John received a precipitation of 75 to 80 mm. Water in some places there is described as a foot deep and has led to the closures of many major streets.
In the Nova Scotia town of Oxford, localized flooding in the downtown area has caused the town to go into emergency mode.
In Halifax's Stanfield International Airport, a number of flights have been delayed or canceled. (Feb.15)
