MANILA, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) -- At least nine people were killed and seven others were missing in floods and landslides caused by sudden downpours in eastern Philippines.

Red Cross communications officials told local television network GMA News Wednesday that aside from the nine confirmed fatalities, the organization has also received a report of another death which they have yet to verify.

Most of the deaths were reported in eastern Samar province, the most vulnerable zone to typhoons and heavy rains in the archipelago, the report said.

A low pressure has been hovering above the central Philippines since Feb. 15, bringing heavy rains for an unexpectedly long duration. Major roads in Samar were cut off while bridges were reportedly damaged.     (Feb.19)
