Canadian man killed after house collapses under weight of snow

OTTAWA, March 16 (Xinhua) -- A Canadian man from the province of Quebec was killed Sunday when the roof of his house collapsed under the weight of snow, making him the fourth victim in the province of such accidents this year.

The 55-year-old man was in his second floor bedroom when he heard a noise that made him suspect the roof was caving in. He then alarmed his wife and two children and helped them out, but he was not able to go out before the house collapsed.

The accident happened at about 7 a.m. local time (1100 GMT) in the city of Shawinigan to the northeast of Montreal. The man's body was discovered an hour later by emergency crews.

Police believe that the collapse was probably the result of snow accumulation on the roof and have warned neighbors about the danger, Quebec provincial police spokesman Marc Butz told Canadian Television.

The heavy snowfall in Quebec this winter has caused several roof collapses, most notably a cave-in on March 12 at a warehouse that killed three women. (Mar.18)
