Source:China Meteorological News Press

With more than 20 thousand dead and 40 thousand missing, power failure in Yangon and traffic standstill in several regions, the tropical storm Nargis get the whole world shocked. Why Nargis is so devastating? How much might does it have?

The typhoon expert Zhang Ling in the Typhoon and Marine Meteorological Forecasting Center of CMA said that Nargis was the first storm from Bay of Bengal. The maximum intensity of the typhoon had risen to 59 meters per second, which was as same as the super typhoon. Nargis developed in the west sea surface of the Bay of Bengal on noon of April 28 and moved northward with two times of intensification.

Tropical storm is the most serious, frequent occurred and difficult-prevention natural disaster in the country of Bangladesh, Myanmar, India and other south Asian countries. There are 15 tropical storms landing since 2003. Nargis has huge devastation because of two factors: first, there are extremely active convections in the Bay of Bengal, strong equatorial air stream of Somalia and abnormal intensification of westerlies of the Indian regions, which contributed to the development of the storm. Second, the regions that Nargis hit have dense population and weak economic basis, which make the disaster worse. It is informed that the storm hit regions in Myanmar and Bangladesh are plains and river-crowded areas. In case of storm hit those factroes will cause severe flooding.

China is located in the northwest of the Pacific Ocean where tropical cyclone frequently occurred. There are 38% cyclones of the total sum in the world happened in the region. So now the expert Zhang Ling said China has entered the critical period of storm prevention and the situation is not optimistic. The storm Neoguri landed on China on April 18, which is the earliest storm since 1949. The prevention for the super typhoon is the key work of the disaster prevention and reduction. Now CMA has strengthened the monitoring and forecasting work for typhoon. (May 8)
