On June 25 the 60th session of the WMO Executive Council was held in Geneva. On the conference the 53th International Meteorological Organization (IMO) prize was awarded to Chinese academician Qin Dahe by voting.
The IMO is the highest honor of the WMO which comes from IMO established in 1873 and the predecessor of WMO. The prize is awarded to the people who contribute much to meteorology, hydrology and geophysical sciences.
Qin Dahe was the director of the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) from November 2000 to March 2007. Now he is one of the standing members of the CPPCC National Committee. He is a renowned expert on glaciology and climatology and academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Third World Academy of Sciences.
As a prestigious expert on cryosphere science and global climate change he has played a wide and important role in international programs such as ITASE and the compilation of the IPCC report. He always pays more attention on international cooperation especially on the developing countries and actively joins in the activities and programs of the WMO. (June 30)
