Recently, Michel Morel, one of the Belt and Road meteorological visiting scholars (hereinafter referred to as thevisiting scholars) from Seychelles Meteorological Authority (SMA), has been engaged in global weather forecasting technical exchanges. Collaborating with Dr. ZHOU Ningfang, Chief Forecaster of National Meteorological Centre (NMC), China Meteorological Administration (CMA), he analyzed heavy precipitation forecastin Seychelles.
“I have learned more about the work of the NMC, especially in the areaof Global Weather Forecasting Service.” Morel is very interested inthe application of artificial intelligence (AI) in weather forecasting, and has been trying to apply AI in Seychelles weather forecasting. “Chinese weather forecasters are not only familiar with weather science and knowledge, but also often utilize advanced technology to improve the accuracy of weather forecast. The weather consultation is also a good way of communication and analysis.”

At the National Climate Centre (NCC), CMA,Charles John Malekela, a visiting scholar from the Tanzania Meteorological Agency (TMA), is using local data to analyze the climatic conditions for assessment of wind and solar energy in Chinese cities. He said, “In the context of climate warming, international meteorological cooperation is conducive to promoting multinationals to join hands addressing this challenge, and China has much experience in climate change response and early warning system development.” Through attending academic conferences, Malakela has learned that China is building a cloud-based meteorological early warning system in Pakistan. “Science and technology is crucial to improving early warning capacity, and I hope Tanzania can also build an early warning system like this.”

Eston Ranson Mogha, meteorologist also from TMA, is working at the National Satellite Meteorological Centre (NSMC), CMA, monitoring and researching weather extremes in Tanzania by using FENGYUN meteorological satellite data of China. “Meteorological disasters such as droughts and floods bring about bigthreat, and hopefully my research will contributeto protecting people's lives and property as much as possible.” Mogha said, “FENGYUN meteorological satellite is very helpful in monitoring precipitation, fire spots, winds, etc., and I will recommend FENGYUN meteorological satelliteto other meteorologists in Tanzania.”
Leta Bekele Gudina, a visiting scholar from Ethiopian Meteorological Institute (EMI), is carrying out research at CMA Earth System Modeling and Prediction Centre (CEMC). He said that at present, EMI utilizes weather radar and other instrumentsfor observation, but still needs to build more meteorological facilities to enhance observation and forecasting capabilities. “Every year, many Ethiopian students come to China to learnmeteorology and contribute to the development of meteorological servicein Ethiopian after returning home. China's experience and practices in meteorological science and technology and disaster prevention and mitigation are good experiences for Ethiopia's reference, and cooperation between the two sides is very crucial.”
Talking about the studying and living experience in China, Morel said, “I am extremely grateful for the help rendered by my Chinese friends. They make me feel like at home.”
Malakela said, "China and Africa are reliable partners, and China is always ready to share its knowledge and experience."
Mogha said, “Tanzania and China are good friends, and the two countries have a lot of cooperation in the meteorological field. And I will continue to be a good envoy of friendship when I return home.”
Gudina said, “Visiting China is not only a good opportunity for me to learn and exchange ideas, but also provides an important way for me to understand China's meteorological work and the way of life of the Chinese people.”
