On October 14, the 3rd Meeting of the GCOS Surface Climate Reference Network (GSRN) Task Team opened in Xi’an, Shaanxi, China. Over 40 domestic and foreign experts from World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the China Meteorological Administration (CMA), and related departments and institutes of higher education converge to discuss the progresses of GSRN and consult on its future development.

GSRN is an important component of the WMO Integrated Global Observing System (WIGOS) and will play an important role in global climate change monitoring.
This event aims to expedite the construction and implementation of the pilot phase of GSRN, promote China’s next-generation intelligent ground-based observing technology, and review and adopt the next step of GSRN work plan.

On October 14, representatives conducted in-depth exchanges on contents like the overview of the GSRN program, and the overall progress of the GSRN-LC.
The five-day event from October 14 to 18 will also revolve around the progress, achievements and problems during the GSRN trial operation, data products of GSRN, web portal and data transmission standards of GSRN, GSRN capacity development, as well as the next work plan of the GSRN Task Team and the meeting summary.

It is informed that in November 2021, delegated by WMO, CMA established GSRN Lead Centre (GSRN-LC). Under the guidance of the Department of Integrated Observations and Department of International Cooperation of CMA, CMA Meteorological Observation Centre (MOC) is carrying out related construction work of GSRN-LC.
