Not long before, the 49th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva was held in Geneva, Switzerland. Professor ZHI Xiefei's team from the School of Atmospheric Sciences of Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology (NUIST) and Professor ZHANG Yonghong's team from Wuxi University collaborated on the project "Innovative Prediction Techniques for Extreme Precipitation and Urban Flooding (Techniques de prédiction innovantes sur les precipitations extrèmes et lesinondations urbaines)" (hereinafter referred to as the Project), which was exhibited online and won the first gold medal for China's meteorological academia.

The Project focused on the challenge of extreme precipitation and urban flood forecasting, based on a variety of improved Deep Learning (DL) techniques, customized loss functions and a priori knowledge of atmospheric sciences, achieving high quality and precise extreme precipitation and urban flood forecasting at multiple time scales, which can provide an important reference for the government and the society to prevent and mitigate disaster hazards, as well as for the future development of the city. And some of the results have been successfully used in more than 10 cities, including Beijing, Ningbo, Wuxi, Taizhou and so on.
