From June 22 to 26, local time, the Eightieth session of the Executive Council (EC-80) of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) takes place at WMO Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. Dr. CHEN Zhenlin, Administrator of the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) and Permanent Representative of China to WMO, is leading the Chinese delegation to the session.
The Executive Council will discuss how to align priorities and provide direction to scientific and technical programmes through a modified operating plan. It will focus on advancing WMO governance, strategic planning and financial management and will consider the recommendations on WMO governance from the UN’s Joint Inspection Unit.
In addition, the award ceremony for the 70th International Meteorological Organization (IMO) Prize will be held during the session. XU Jianmin, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, will receive the prize on-site and deliver a special lecture.
During the session, the Chinese delegation will fully share its views on a range of topics including the United Nations Early Warnings for All (EW4All) initiative, meteorological Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications and global capacity building. A booth is set up by the Chinese side at the venue to demonstrate the cloud-based early warning platform and MAZU Menu-to-Service Platform under MAZU, China’s solution for EW4All.
Dr. CHEN Zhenlin will meet with the WMO President, WMO Secretary-General, Director General of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), and heads of National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) from multiple countries, to deepen cooperation in early warning systems, artificial intelligence, meteorological satellites and personnel exchange.
