From June 26 to 27, the first China-Central Asia Meteorological Forum (hereinafter referred to as the Forum) was held in Urumqi, Xinjiang, China.
Representatives and experts from the National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) of China, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyztan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Pakistan, Mongolia, Nepal, and other countries, as well as from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), attended the forum offline and online.
Urumqi Initiative on Meteorological Disaster Prevention and Mitigation and Response to Climate Change was adopted among participants during the Forum.
Focusing on regional collaboration and support for disaster risk management and adaptation to climate change and building on existing efforts, participants reached the consensus on strengthening cooperation in terms of regional integrated meteorological observation capabilities, meteorological information sharing, satellite remote-sensing and data application, joint development of regional high-resolution numerical weather prediction (NWP) models, joint implement of the United Nations (UN) Early Warnings for All (EW4All) Initiative at international, regional, sub-regional, and national levels, climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction by carrying out collaborative research, sub-regional cooperation mechanisms and partnerships with regional organizations leveraging the WMO Regional Association (RA) II Partnership Strategy, etc.
Besides, smart meteorological equipment exhibition of the forum was hosted on June 27, showcasing the modernized meteorological technologies and equipment in terms of AI, scientific innovation, and meteorological disaster prevention and mitigation, which attracted wide attention and interest of domestic and overseas visitors.
