On September 2, China Meteorological Administration (CMA) published major weather and climate events happened across China in summer 2015 at a press conference.
Firstly, frequent heavy rainfalls hit the south. The summer of 2015 has witnessed 1.5 days of rainstorm across China, a little below the normal level of the corresponding period 1.6 days. Most of rainstorms hit the south, including Yangze river and Huai river, northeastern regions of South of the Yangtze River, Guangxi, southern Guizhou and southeastern Guangdong, where rainstorm days are 3-5 with isolated over 6 days.
Secondly, the rainy season of the North China got a late start and less rainfall. In the rainy season from later July to early August, North China recieved rainfall 65.2mm, 52.1% percent less than normal years.
Thirdly, the North China and Northwest China experienced summer droughts. At end of August, moderate to severe meteorological drought was observed in central Inner Mongolia, northern and southwestern Shanxi, central and northern Shaanxi, central-eastern Gansu, and Ningxia.
Fourthly, frequent severe convection weather hit isolated areas of China, of which 25 provinces were hit by thunderstorm and hail.
Fifthly, this summer saw decreasing typhoons and relatively small losses resulted from them. There are 9 typhoons formed in this summer, which is less than normal years (11.2), of which 4 made landfall in China.
Sixthly, East Asia monsoon and the South China Sea monsoon were relatively weak.
Seventhly, El Nino continues to strengthen, which will be under monitoring closely. (September 6)
