On May 4,Cao Xiaozhong, Deputy Administrator of China Meteorological Administration (CMA) met with Ms. Marglad Bencomo, executive director of the Bolivarian Agency for Space Activities (ABAE) in Beijing to discuss international cooperation of FENGYUN meteorological satellites (FY satellites).
Dr. CAO Xiaozhong said that Venezuela was a good friend of China, and the two countries have carried out extensive exchanges and cooperation in fields such as economy, culture, science and technology, education, etc. He hoped that deeper and broader cooperation could be carried out in meteorology in the future.
Against the background of climate change, extreme weather events occur worldwide with higher frequency and stronger intensity, posing challenges to meteorological practitioners worldwide, and the importance and necessity of international meteorological cooperation has become more prominent.
At present, FY satellites provide data products and services for 126 countries and regions. CMA is looking forward to deepening cooperation with ABAE, especially in the area of giving play to the role of meteorological satellites in global monitoring, and joining hands to deal with meteorological disasters.
Ms. Marglad Bencomo thanked CMA for its invitation and spoke highly of the role of FY satellites in providing global services. She said that since 2005, China and Venezuela have been closely cooperating in the field of aerospace, which is of much help to Venezuela. In 2022, Venezuela was hit by floods and images of the affected areas were obtained with the support of the China National Space Administration (CNSA).
Floods, hurricanes and other meteorological disasters frequently occur in Venezuela, and ABAE looks forward to deepening pragmatic cooperation with CMA in the future to jointly deal with extreme weather events.
Ms. Marglad Bencomoand her colleagues also visited the National Satellite Meteorological Centre (NSMC) of CMA to learn more about the development of FY satellites and relevant application services.
