On February 7, the members of China's 35th Antarctic expedition team installed an automatic meteorological station in Antarctic ice sheet, 100 kilometers away from the Zhongshan Station, a Chinese research base in Antarctica, to collect information on temperature, relative humidity as well as wind direction and speed in Antarctica.

The newly installed automatic meteorological station

The meteorological data of Antarctica is scarce. The China's Antarctic expedition team has previously set up several automatic weather stations along the Zhongshan Station to Kunlun Station. The newly installed automatic meteorological station can acquire long-term and continuous meteorological data combined with other weather stations.

“The newly installed automatic weather station will fill the gap of meteorological detection for the Panda section (from Zhongshan Station to Kunlun Station), which further improve China's meteorological observation capability for the Panda section.” Meng Shang, a member of China's 35th Antarctic expedition team said. In future, China will set up more automatic weather stations in the Panda section to provide data support for weather and climate research and forecast of data support for China's weather and climate research and forecasting services in the Antarctic.

During the 35th Antarctic expedition, besides the installation of an automatic weather station, the expedition team also carried out sounding balloon flying activities in the Zhongshan Station and Kunlun Station areas to obtain temperature, wind speed, wind direction, air pressure and other meteorological information.
