On September 15, International Forum on High-quality Meteorological Development was held in Beijing. It aims to share the experience of development plan formulation and high-quality development, as well as establishing a global exchange and collaboration platform for meteorological strategic research. Representatives from World Meteorological Organization (WMO), European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT), and 14 countries and regions attended the forum online and offline. Mr. ZHUANG Guotai, Administrator of CMA and Permanent Representative of China with WMO, and Professor Petteri Taalas, Secretary-General of WMO, made the opening speeches via video. Mr. ZHANG Zuqiang, Deputy Administrator of CMA, chaired this event.
ZHUANG Guotai pointed out that with the support of the Chinese government and relevant departments, CMA has been vigorously pushing ahead high-quality meteorological development. CMA will continue to step up scientific research of earth system numerical weather prediction models and severe weather prediction, and push forward meteorological capacity building in terms of sophisticated monitoring, precise forecasting, and tailored services, as well as information supporting system.
The year 2022 marks 50 years of the 50th Anniversary of the restoration of the lawful seat of the People’s Republic of China in the WMO. CMA is willing to share China’s meteorological development experience with other WMO Members, and continue to reinforce the global service of FENGYUN meteorological satellite and “Belt and Road” meteorological cooperation. CMA will further contribute to WMO and the global meteorological development, as well as to build a community with a shared future for mankind.
Petteri Taalas said he was happy to address the forum and make the opening remarks. He pointed out that he had collaborated with China for a long time and the development here was quite impressive. CMA has become one of the world-leading meteorological services, and the Chinese government has been investing a lot in the services. He said that now China had state-of-the-art observing systems, satellite programs, computing facilities and also the manpower had been impressive. He also expressed his gratitude for the work CMA had done to assist WMO Members worldwide, in particular, the training of experts provided by Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology (NUIST) especially for less developed countries (LDCs). He hoped that CMA would further assist LDCs,share its expertise, and looked forward to more results from Belt and Road programs for LDCs.
At this event, Dr. Zhang Wenjian, Assistant Secretary-General of WMO, and representatives from institutions like ECMWF, and WMO Regional Office for Asia and the South West Pacific made reports on their respective strategic development plans. Furthermore, representatives from CMA have conducted exchanges over Guideline on Promoting the High-quality Meteorological Development and the 14th Five-year Plan of China Meteorological Development.
