On April 17, comprehensive observation experiment and on-site scientific expedition of Sanjiangyuan region and glacier region climate response project was kicked off in Xining, Qinghai. This scientific expedition is one of the tasks of the second comprehensive scientific expedition to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and will conduct major research into the impact of the coordinated role of westerly wind-monsoon on the Asian water tower. 20 institutions have joined this research and will mainly focus on an insight into the impact of climate change on the frozen soil, vegetation, and water resources condition change in Sanjiangyuan region.
The team will carry out expeditions in regions like Qinghai and Sichuan. According to XU Xiangde, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, researcher of Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences and commander in chief of the expedition, this scientific expedition will further reveal the evolution rule and driving mechanism of westerly wind-monsoon in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, and its impact on comprehensive environment effect and extreme weather and climate events change in the Asia water tower, and provide science-based basis for ecological environment conservation, disaster risk prevention and socio-economic development plan formulation in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
Sanjiangyuan region is dubbed as Asian water tower.
