Typhoon Bebinca is expected to make landfall in eastern China

Updated: 14-09-2024

Source: China Meteorological News Press

At 14:00 on September 14,  2024, Typhoon Bebinca was located about 840 kilometers to the southeast of Zhoushan City, Zhejiang Province, China.

According to China Meteorological Administration (CMA), Typhoon Bebinca will move northwestward at about 30 kilometers per hour and gradually increase in intensity and make landfall along the coastline from Taizhou, Zhejiang to Qidong, Jiangsu from the night of September 15 to the morning of September 16, and gradually weaken afterward.

WANG Qian from  National Meteorological Centre (NMC) of CMA said there is still some uncertainty about the Typhoon's landfall intensity and time. At present, the Typhoon is most likely to land in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province to Shanghai, China, with landing intensity of typhoon level or strong typhoon level.

NMC continues to issue yellow typhoon warning at 10:00 on September 14.

It is noticed that typhoons with an intensity of strong typhoon level or above or super strong typhoon level cause serious impacts.

Typhoon Yagi, the 11th typhoon of this year, has caused serious impact. Yagi was generated in the northwest Pacific on September 1 and weakened into a tropical depression at 17:00 on September 8. Since September 2, Yagi landed on Luzon Island in the Philippines, Wenchang City in Hainan Province, Xuwen County in Guangdong Province in China and Quang Ninh Province in Vietnam. It landed on the eastern coast of Luzon Island in the Philippines around 14:30 on September 2 (20 meters/second, level 8, tropical storm level), landed on the coast of Wenchang City in Hainan Province, China around 16:20 on the September 6 (62 meters/second, level 17 or above, super typhoon level), and landed in Jiaowei Township, Xuwen County, Guangdong Province around 22:20 (58 meters/second, level 17, super typhoon level), and then entered the Beibu Gulf. It landed on the southern coast of Quang Ninh Province in Vietnam around 15:30 on September 7 (58 meters/second, level 17, super typhoon level), and then gradually weakened. At 11:00 on September 8, Yagi weakened into a tropical depression in Son La Province, Vietnam.

LIU Da from NMC said that, in response to Super Typhoon Yagi, we have got some experience in disaster prevention and mitigation. When typhoon approachs, the public needs to pay attention to the typhoon forecast and warning information issued by CMA and local meteorological services, pay attention to the safety of water and electricity, and move to a safe place.

Based on meteorological data from 1949 to 2023, typhoons that make landfall in China during the Mid-Autumn Festival are not rare, with a higher proportion of strong tropical storms and strong typhoon level, totaling close to 80%.

Typhoon Bebinca will make landfall more northward compared to previous autumn typhoons which have made landfall in China.
