On April 10, China's 40th Antarctic expedition concluded with the Xuelong polar icebreaker returning to Qingdao, Shandong, China.
The expedition has carried out research on the impact and feedback of climate change on the ecological system in Antarctica and related international cooperation. Besides, the construction of the Qinling Station — China’s fifth scientific outpost in Antarctica has been one of the highlights of this expedition.

4 staff from the China meteorological departments engaged in the expedition. ZHU Kongju, an engineer from the Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences (CAMS), returned home with Xuelong after completing two Antarctic inland expedition tasks of "observation and simulation of ice and gas interaction in the Southeast Pole" and "Antarctic inland atmospheric environment observation technical experiment".
ZHANG Lei, from CAMS, YE Zhengqian from Hebei Provincial Meteorological Service, and WANG Lingzhang from Zhejiang Provincial Meteorological Service will engage in regular meteorological observation missions at the Zhongshan Station, and Changcheng Station for one year.
According to ZHU Kongju, inland expedition team set out on December 16, 2023, and returned to the Zhongshan Station on February 15, 2024, living in the inland for 62 days altogether, and has completed the meteorological research on the departure base of the Zhongshan Station, the Taishan Station, the Kunlun Station and so on.

Around the task of "observation and simulation of ice and gas interaction in the Southeast Pole ", the meteorological team has maintained weather stations along the route, expanding the scope of automatic meteorological observation and improved the monitoring capacity of the station network. During the inland journey, the team has harnessed the ground object spectrometer to measure the spectral reflectance of different snow surfaces and the hardness of the surface snow surface, and to study the snow characteristics of the inland ice sheet.
Centering on the task of "Antarctic inland atmospheric environment observation technical experiment", the team carried out relevant observation experiments.
