March 23 this year marks the 63rd World Meteorological Day, with the theme "the Future of Weather, Climate and Water across Generations". It also coincides with the 150th anniversary of International Meteorological Organization (IMO),the predecessor of World Meteorological Organization (WMO). On March 18, China Meteorological Administration (CMA) and Chinese Meteorological Society (CMS) kicked off the commemorative activity of World Meteorological Day 2023 in Beijing.

Mr. Chen Zhenlin, Head of CMA attended the launching ceremony. Mr. Zhang Zuqiang, Deputy Administrator of CMA, Mr. Cao Xiaozhong, Deputy Administrator of CMA, and leaders from National Development and Reform Commission, Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Ecology and Environment, Ministry of Water Resources, and China Association for Science and Technology participated in the event.

Agreeable weather, climate and water resources are indispensable to the vibrant natural ecosystem on earth and the everlasting human civilization. The theme of this year’s World Meteorological Day aims to advocate the whole society to deepen understanding of weather and climate system against the backdrop of global warming, and prompt the global community to take more effective action to jointly cope with challenges incurred by climate change via international cooperation, and coordination and communication related to weather, climate and water.

During the launching ceremony, Mr. Chen Zhenlin conferred the flag of “meteorological science popularization tour in villages and countries”. This activity will encompass colorful meteorological science popularization activities nationwide.

In the meantime, CMA announced 10 major meteorological modernization construction projects for 2022. The youth volunteer service work of meteorological science popularization was also displayed during the event.

On the same day, the park of CMA, meteorological stations and other meteorological science popularization sites across the nation were opened to the public to boost the publicity of meteorological science popularization in a way which is pleasing to the public.

In the next few days, meteorological departments nationwide will combine local characteristics, and promote meteorological science popularization into government offices, schools, rural areas, communities, enterprises and public institutions via online and offline activities with the purpose of enhancing the ability of governments at all levels and the public to prevent disaster and avoid risk and harness climate resources in a science-based manner.
