On February 8, China Meteorological Administration (CMA) Economic Transformation of Climate Resources Key Laboratory (hereafter referred to as the Laboratory) was established in Chongqing. The Laboratory is one of the 9 ministerial-level open laboratories designated by CMA. The Laboratory will carry out scientific research in five major fields, namely, climate and economic big data monitoring and assessment, objective transformation technological approach, quantitative economic value valuation, effective transformation approach and policy, and climate change and economic relationship.
Bestowed with diverse land types, mountains crisscrossed by rivers, rich three-dimensional climate, and plentiful ecological resources, Chongqing is a natural scientific testing ground for the economic transformation of climate resources. It has initiated pilot programs like low-carbon city, and carbon emission rights trading, and cut through the channel of resource into asset realization.
The Laboratory will conduct relevant research on the strength of the industrialand technical advantages of CMA, and advantages of Chongqing in terms of weather and climate landscape, unique three-dimensional climate, historical culture, uncanny Karst geographical landform, and exceptional climate-dependent health preservation.
In terms of agriculture, the Laboratory will conduct crop cultivation, and seed introduction and expansion in climate-suitable areas, and promote the technology of economic transformation of agro-climate resources.
In the aspect of energy, the Laboratory will develop new wind and solar energy projects to enhance the utilization efficiency of clean resources based on full-chain tailored meteorological service.
As for tourism and healthcare industry, the Laboratory will incorporate meteorological tourism into the regional tourism planning, and guide the utilization of climate tourism resources in a science-based manner.
In the field of low-carbon industry, the Laboratory will explore key meteorological technologies like numerical weather prediction (NWP) to buttress carbon market trading, and harness technologies like climate risk verification and performance evaluation to serve low-carbon city construction.
