On May 24, local time, the 19th World Meteorological Congress announced the latest batch of Centennial Observing Station. The three meteorological observatories in Hailar, Inner Mongolia, Bengbu, Anhui, and Hangzhou, Zhejiang declared by China were recognized as World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Centennial Observing Station because of their long history and their commitment to continuous observation and environmental protection. Dr. ZHANG Zuqiang, Deputy Administrator of China Meteorological Administration (CMA), received the certificate on behalf of China. So far, a total of 18 meteorological observatories in China have been certified as WMO Centennial Observing Station.
Hailar national baseline climate observatory, Bengbu national baseline meteorological observatory and Hangzhou national baseline climate observatory was established in 1909, 1915 and 1919 respectively. All of them accorded with 10 criteria. For one hundred years, these meteorological stations carried out continuous meteorological observation and accumulated national basic data, and also witnessed the history, civilization and scientific progress of modern meteorological development. They are the embodiment of the scientific spirit in the Chinese meteorological community.
Hailar national baseline climate observatory boasts a history of 114 years. Located in the eastern part of Inner Mongolia Plateau, it has accumulated a large amount of climatic data and played an essential role in the development of agriculture and animal husbandry, climate resources exploitation and utilization, and economic and social development. Bengbu national baseline meteorological observatory, situated in the Huaihe River for 100 years has played a role in keeping the Huaihe River safe and assisting flood control and disaster reduction. Hangzhou national baseline climate observatory now also assumes the role of meteorological knowledge popularization and others, which will play its role in ensuring the success of the 19th Asian Games.
118 centennial observatories from 32 Members of WMO were certified, including 86 meteorological observatories, 22 hydrological observatories and 10 ocean observatories.
